The Durutti Column \ M24J (Anthology) [FBN 164 / CD]

M24J (Anthology) is a collection of valuable passages recorded by The Durutti Column between 1979 and 2011 for various iterations of Factory Records, including poignant tributes to Anthony H. Wilson and Ian Curtis.

Available as a gatefold double vinyl (with bonus 7") and 2xCD set, M24J includes selections from The Return of the Durutti Column, LC, Another Setting, Short Stories for Pauline, Without Mercy, Circuses and Bread, The Guitar and Other Machines, Vini Reilly, Obey the Time, Treatise on the Steppenwolf and A Paean to Wilson.

Reilly's music remains resolutely unclassifiable, and sounds better and better with each passing year. "Don't listen to the form," he insists, "listen to the content. Don't listen to the style, the tradition, the technique, just the content of the music. Then judge. People say The Durutti Column is this or that. I don't care so long as we make good music. There's so much good music around. Don't bother with form. Just enjoy."

Bonus tracks on the CD version include three tracks recorded live in Leeds in October 1980, these being the earliest preserved professional in-concert recordings by Vini Reilly. The bonus 7" included in the vinyl package features two previously unreleased live recordings: a cover of Peter Green's Albatross recorded in 2004, and Spooky Tune, recorded with Poppy Morgan at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester in 2011, Vini's last major concert to date.

The remastered 2xCD set is housed in a jewel case; copies ordered direct from FBN are delivered in a Factory Benelux slipcase. The vinyl version is housed in a double gatefold sleeve printed on white matt board and includes as a digital copy (MP3).

Reviews:

"Sketch for Summer immediately sets the mood: tranquil, modest, instrumental" (Orr, 09/2018)

"Exquisite haiku slices from this uniquely Mancunian talent" (Electronic Sound, 09/2018)

"This newly compiled double disc neatly summarises Durutti output from the late 70s into the 21st century in 33 tracks. Sketch for Summer from the Return of the Durutti Column starts things out almost at the very beginning, Reilly's fluid and instantly recognisable guitar introducing itself as the band's line of communication in lieu of vocal contributions (though there were some to come a bit later on). There is a fantastic version of The Beggar captured on tape live in Paris which demonstrates the magic of the band admirably, and Love No More includes an operatic vocal styling and even slight Flamenco element to the guitar. The Column never minded throwing a new tricks into the mix, even if Vini's guitar was almost always in there somewhere, clearly marking out the territory."

"On the second disc pride of place must go to Reilly's tribute to Tony Wilson, the three part Paean to Wilson. The first portion is a looped question that Tony posed 'Is this an art form or are you just a technician?', which segues into the next phase entitled Chant, really driving with some great guitar wizardry and lovely female vocals. Completing the trilogy is Darkness Here, a dramatic viola coda. Spellbinding stuff. Speaking of Wilson, he was apparently given to admonish Vini for his singing and lyrics, probably part of the reason why some much of DC's work is instrumental. For me though The Missing Boy (also on this disc), with Reilly's hesitant voice in full effect and mysterious words, works really well. The 3 live tracks from Leeds in 1980 may provide temptation to the collector and there's certainly a lot to love in this candid shot of the very early days of the Column as a live entity. There is some nice engaging patter with the audience ('Do you want some more? Nice audience... Ok, fucking awful audience!') and the quietly demonstrative way he set out his stall impresses here, the sheer nerve of allowing himself to be quiet in the din of Post Punk. Quite a feat, really."

"Vini Reilly's work as Durutti Column may well be, as the press release has it, unclassifiable. Once one is familiar with his guitar work though, you instantly know when you're listening to him, it's a signature as clear as a voice. Newcomers now have the perfect starting point in M24J, as neat a summing up of Durutti Column's work as we are likely to come across." (Louder Than War, 09/2018)
